Are you reporting to a mundane, corporate bloke?

CEOs are almost mythical creatures trapped in a world of their own and under the grim presumption that everybody understands their vague, imaginary ideas. The least common denominator in an organization only hears of the 'name' and tragically that's how the identities of many CEOs are revealed to the world - just a "name" !

Do we expect the visionary to step out and socialize with the masses when there are evidently more pressing things to be addressed? Let us just say this was a rhetorical question and move on. However the fact remains that CEOs play a symbolic communication role, people working for him WANT to know him as a person and as a leader. In the realm of things, CEOs have discovered a new weapon of mass communication - Blogs.

Blogs are an access into great minds and that is why CEO blogs will never go out of fashion. What is unique about the medium is that it converts a formidable entity into an open book. Suddenly there is before you a human telling his thoughts about 'stuff' and his neonatal ideas. The result - trust. While Jonathan Schwartz, CEO of Sun Microsystems claims that "... having a blog is not going to be a matter of choice, any more than having e-mail is today", CEO of Naseba, Scott Ragsdale believes that blogging helps him stay focused on his climb.

It is rather unfortunate that despite the evident advantages, very few CEOs dare to bare. While the debate remains that only a few are wired to the medium, one wonders if it is not the incapacity but more the unwillingness to communicate...
